Overview

A preposition is a word that shows a relationship between other words in a sentence. It usually shows direction, loation, time, or that introduces an object.

In Spanish, a preposition should never be found at the end of a sentence.

Translates to to.

• Used to express a range:
  • De lunes a viernes translates to From Monday through Friday.
  • De tres a cinco translates to From 3 to 5.

De

Translates to from or of. It is used to indicate possession, place of origin, type or contents.

Debajo

Translates to below or under.

Delante

Translates to in front.

Desde

Translates to from or since. It marks the beginning of an action, a starting point, or a particular perspective.

Detrás

Translates to behind.

En

Translates to in or on.

• When used in relation to an object that can hold things, en translates to in and encima de should instead be used to describe on top of.
  • El gato está en la caja translates to The cat is in the box.
  • El gato está encima de la caja translates to The cat is on the box.

Encima

Translates to on the surface of or above, over. More specific then en.

Entre

Translates to between or among.

Para

Translates to for or in order to.
